The Stages Of Hypothyroidism
An underactive thyroid has many manifestations of its basic fault of low hormone and calcium triggering output. They don’t all rush to the surface at once and many are seemingly inter related so diagnosis is almost and art as well as a science even for the well established medical professional.
The early on signs of hypothyroidism can include: poor muscle tone, fatigue, cold intolerance, increased sensitivity to cold, constipation, depression, muscle cramps and joint pain, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Goiter, thin brittle fingernails, thin brittle hair, paleness, Osteoporosis, decreased sweating, dry, itchy skin, weight gain and water retention and Bradycardia or low heart rate.
Late symptoms of underactive thyroid that start out slow and need a period of time to recognize are a slowing of speech and a hoarse, deepening and breaking voice, dry puffy skin especially on the face, thinning of the outer third of the eyebrows, abnormal menstrual cycles and lastly low basal body core temperature.
Among the uncommon and even rare symptoms are the increased severity of the late symptoms and some entirely new items that might also indicate Myxedema Coma. These are impaired memory, brain fog and inattentiveness, a slowing heart rate, diminished cardiac output, sluggish reflexes, hair loss, anemia, B12 deficiency, difficulty swallowing, shortness of breath, a shallow and slow respiratory pattern, an increased need for sleep, irritability and mood instability,Yellowing of the skin, impaired renal function, elevated serum cholesterol, decreased libido, decreased sense of taste and smell, and puffy face, hands and feet. In very rare presentations of hypothyroidism, acute psychosis can develop.
