Failure to Follow Gluten Free Diet Increases the Risk of Mortality

Diabetes MellitusCELIAC DISEASE
- Medium term complications such as osteoporosis occur or diabetes mellitus
- Cancer and cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of death

The single most effective treatment for people with celiac disease is to follow a gluten-free diet for life. If they do, either for lack of diagnosis or they do not meet the dietary advice, the disorder involves increased risk of mortality, caused mainly by cancer and cardiovascular disease. So says a study published in “Journal of the American Medical Association.”

Most of the patients with this disorder are not diagnosed because sometimes no symptoms and therefore are not treated. In these cases, the more likely that “the medium term, appear complications such as osteoporosis or diabetes mellitus type I, for example, long-term, cancer (intestinal lymphoma, tongue, esophagus explains …)”, Isabel Polanco, Chief of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, Hospital de La Paz. “This disease is multisystemic, ie affects all organs and body systems. Hence, there is increased mortality among untreated patients,” added the specialist.

Given this association, a team of scientists at the University Hospital of Oreb (Sweden) conducted a study to examine the mortality risk of these patients compared with the general population. Is not the first time it is, but “the earlier work, unlike this one, had included a small sample of participants,” said Peter Green, Medical Center Columbia University (New York, United States), an editorial accompanying the research.

Celiac disease develops in genetically predisposed individuals and is a permanent intolerance to gluten (a protein that forms part of the wheat, barley, oats and rye and other cereals). “For the diagnosis, clinical suspicion leads her on a serological study. If markers are positive, then proceed to a biopsy, a definitive test that will determine whether the small intestinal mucosa is atrophic (loss of villi),” says Eduardo Arranz, president of the Spanish Society of Celiac Disease and professor of the Faculty of Medicine of Valladolid.

The ultimate test
This research analyzed data from the second test: small bowel biopsies taken between 1969 and 2008 in Sweden and fell into three distinct groups: those with atrophy of the intestinal mucosa (confirmed cases of celiac disease), those showed only inflammation of the gallbladder (with intestinal atrophy, the changes that occur when a person ingests gluten celiac) and, finally, those who, although they had a positive serologic test, the normal intestinal mucosa (latent). “These are patients who could develop the disease over time,” he adds Arranz.

All were suspected of having the disease, so none had begun to follow a diet without gluten. “We note that in three cases increased the risk of mortality,” say the authors of the research. The results showed that the highest risk had it affected by inflammation, which had 72% more likely. Patients with celiac disease, 39% and those with latent 35%.

“The high risk of mortality in the inflammation is not due to sensitivity to gluten, to other more serious diseases are those that increase the figure. Inflammation is a feature it shares with other diseases,” says the President of the Company.

Attention to symptoms
Given the results of this latest study, which again shows an increase in mortality among those with no treatment, the study authors opt to pay more attention to these patients and try to refine the early diagnosis.

In line with the conclusions of the study, Arranz insists that “no patient with intestinal inflammation or atrophy should remain untracked. Confirmed the diagnosis with a gluten-free diet, the mucosa will be normalized and the patient is out of danger.”

In the same vein, Dr. Polanco says that “we must maintain a high index of suspicion. There are signs that until now were not considered. We must remember that different circumstances, such as anorexia, anemia, impotence, repeated abortions, and so on. may be symptoms of celiac disease. In this sense, a new diagnostic protocol approved by the Ministry takes into account symptoms to those who must make the relevant evidence. ”

Symptoms of Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes Mellitus Diabetes Mellitus is a disease that generates more global concern and is related to problems with insulin production, which prevents the ingested sugar reaches the cells, which is stored in the blood and causes serious drawbacks.

For symptoms must differentiate the types of Diabetes Mellitus. On one side is the Type 1, which occurs in people who have a zero level of insulin production. The main symptoms of this disease are abdominal pain, rapid weight loss and constant thirst.

Type 2 is more difficult to detect because the symptoms marked as explained above. This type of disease is known as “insulin resistance”, since the pancreas produces the hormone but is still not able to bring glucose into cells.

Within this type is also Gestational Diabetes, which is common in pregnant women and can lead to a type 2 years after delivery. The best thing is to make annual checks to see if everything is in order.

Junk food accelerates aging

You all know the consequences of over-consumption of fast food. We know it is a risk factor for obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes and heart disease. If this seemed to us recently, the news is that it has discovered a more negative effect to add to the list of hazards associated with junk food : premature aging .

As studies have shown the School of Dental Medicine Harvard University , foods rich in trans fats, such as hamburgers and fries, accelerate the process of aging in the body and reduce life expectancy. This is due to the presence of phosphate, a component that many restaurants use to conserve and enhance the flavor of these foods, the effects are toxic to the body if consumed regularly. Aronia to Prevent Diabetes

There is an indicator that their presence might be for a possible diabetes. This is an abnormal level of blood sugar but not enough to diagnose diabetes in the patient, is a harbinger of it. Just medical tests indicate that it is necessary to take the initiative and prevent diabetes.

For this there are several paths to take, and if you prefer to move in the field of natural medicine the results of new research with animals will interest you.

We refer to the aronia, a genus of plants that give a fruit of exquisite taste and high antioxidant content, which was used in laboratory rats to test their preventive effects of diabetes. Read the rest of this entry »

Beans used to control for Diabetes (part IV)

“Another interesting fact that we obtained during our work is about a marker that is used to assess cardiovascular damage and is known as C-reactive protein. In this regard, we identified that the consumption of beans significantly reduces the substance, which in turn means that consumption could be lower cardiovascular risk, “she said. Beans used to control for Diabetes (part III)

The researcher explained that to study the beneficial properties of beans and corn have made use of an animal model.

“We apply a model in which rats were induced diabetes and incorporated into your diet and whether cooked beans corn tortilla, which is how humans consume regularly. It is important to note that the diet has been calculated that the animals consumed similar percentages to the intake of the Mexican population. “ Read the rest of this entry »

Beans used to control for Diabetes (part II)

“The fact that Mexicans have genetic predisposition for diabetes does not necessarily mean we have to develop it,” Rosalia Reynoso Camacho said.

Important measures is the control of certain habits among them the exercise, maintain proper body weight, which goes hand in hand with a balanced diet and supplemented with food components that will provide health benefits, in addition to their properties feeder. In response, he explained, is required to identify and rejoin food diet to improve diabetes control when we suffer, but also to avoid it. Read the rest of this entry »

Beans used to control for Diabetes

Diabetes is a multifactorial disease that currently afflicts much of the Mexican population, it is estimated that every year 250 000 new people registered with diabetes in the country.

Concerned by this situation, scholars from the Autonomous University of Querétaro (UAQ) have been given the task of studying the condition with the aim of finding appropriate strategies for its prevention and control to prevent complications. Read the rest of this entry »

Diabetes & Amputation

Between 10 and 15% of diabetics develop the condition in his lower limbs known as “diabetic foot”. For the U.S. 10 or 15% of the approximately 16 million patients with diabetes, corresponding to 1.5 – 2 million people. Altogether one of every $ 7 of health expenditure is spent on treating complications of diabetes. It is remarkable that the lesions on the feet are the most costly complications of diabetes.

One of 4 patients with diabetes during their lifetime will have foot injuries and will undergo major or minor amputations. The 5-year mortality in major amputations is 50% and the risk of limb loss of the other 33% . Postoperative mortality is 12% .

According Apelqvist, 50% of patients who survive a unilateral amputation in 4 years undergo a contralateral amputation.

Amputation of lower limb non-traumatic causes is 15 times higher in diabetics than nondiabetics and 60% of amputees are diabetic. In diabetics 67,000 amputations are performed annually in the U.S.

What is the possibility of rehabilitation for amputation?

80% of amputees below the knee can be rehabilitated, but in high amputation this is unlikely. Because fewer than 65% of patients obtained successful rehabilitation. 25% need more than 300 days to walk again.

The figures quoted give an indication of the importance of trying to save the limb by all available means, including high tech.
