Women who suffer migraines in those who also suffer from visual symptoms or aura may be at increased risk of stroke or stroke. This is what emerges from a study of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and University of Maryland, Baltimore (USA) recently published in the journal Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association. “The risks increase up to 7 times if consumed snuff, take birth control pills or headaches started early.
The study was conducted among 386 women between 15 and 49 who had suffered an ischemic stroke and 614 women who had not suffered. Subsequently classify them as they had suffered migraine with visual aura without it or had not suffered directly. These results confirm findings among women which in migraine visual aura was added, the risk of ischemic stroke was 1.5 times higher.
According to Steven Kittner, author of the study, “Women with recent onset of probable migraine in which there are visual symptoms during the previous year are almost seven times more likely to suffer a stroke compared with women with no history of migraine.” According to investigators, in 8% of strokes analyzed there is a beginning of migraines with visual symptoms in the previous year compared with 1% found in controls.
Both migraine and stroke are common risk factors such as heredity and high blood pressure. Migraine itself has long been considered one of the risk factors of ischemic stroke.
